Now a Provincetown based pianist Craig Combs trained at the Eastman School of Music where he earned his masters and doctorate in piano performance and literature. His first piano faculty positions were with Shenandoah Conservatory of Music and George Mason University. In his forty plus years as a performer, Dr. Combs has appeared in hundreds of performances in a wide array of venues and repertoire. His stage appearances include Merkin Hall, CAMI Hall, the Kennedy Center as well as Yale, Cornell, and Stanford Universities. About Craig's Program: Over the last year of general isolation, I have taken the opportunity to learn and relearn some solo piano repertoire. Besides the simple joy and pleasure of playing and sharing the music, I find this  music challenging in respect to their place in the development of the piano.   The Haydn has no dynamics and was likely written for the harpsichord but still retained elements of the "new" classical style of the Viennese in the 18th C. The Mozart was written for the pianoforte and has dynamic markings but all the aspects of the modern piano are different than the instrument for which it was created. Many Questions arise when playing music on the piano written for a different keyboard instrument. Should we try imitating the technique of the earlier instruments on the modern piano? Is it possible to render a faithful reading of this music on the modern piano? How do changes in society, culture and audience taste over 250 years matter to presentation of 18th C music? And finally, should we even play these works on the modern piano?  I look forward to sharing my thoughts through the music as to how to answer some of these questions.
