Among the highlights of the tour will be visits to dozens of notable gravesites, including those of Josiah Dennis, the 18th century minister whose home is a local landmark; Reverend Nathan Stone, at whose suggestion the town was named in 1793 for its beloved minister; captain Micah Chapman, commander of the Northside Militia during the American Revolution; and Tempe Hedge Howes, whose six-foot marble-slab table-top tomb is one of the architectural marvels of the cemetery. Guide Fox will also highlight the gravesites of seven village seamen who were among 22 Dennis citizens to perish as their schooner Bride—built in the Shiverick shipyard at Sesuit Harbor—went down off Provincetown’s Race Point in a raging storm on October 3, 1841. This Dennis Historical Society event is free. Visitors will gather just before 10 am at the Receiving Tomb, diagonally across from Cape Cod Creamery on the south side of Route 6A. The rain date for this walk is Sunday, July 18, at 2 pm.
